This program trains HSI faculty to become leaders in culturally responsive instructors in the specific context of a Hispanic Serving Institution. This is our most popular program, and more than 300 faculty from HSIs throughout the country have completed the CTL-HSI  program since 2014.

CTL-HSI is the only program in the country that combines cultural competence education with follow up coaching and implementation support. During the summer workshop faculty do a reality check: they use ESCALA-developed metrics to reflect on how well they are currently implementing best practices for Latinx students, and identify any inequitable patterns of success/failure and participation in their classrooms and courses.

The CTL-HSI program is delivered in two parts: first faculty attend a summer kickoff retreat (3 days), then complete a series of online assignments and individualized coaching sessions in fall. Using this innovative, long-term approach, HSI faculty are accountable for making  changes to their teaching through the design and implementation of a SoTL-inspired teaching/learning project.

The CTL -HSI program provides a unique opportunity for HSI faculty to meet faculty from other HSIs, and to exchange ideas with faculty who teach similar courses and student populations. Faculty take part in real-time demonstrations of high impact teaching/learning practices, receive crucial implementation advice, and learn how to measure changes to student engagement and learning. As a result they become more confident and reflective teachers of Latinx students.
