Three Levels of Impact

Teaching is hard work, and the process of changing teaching practices takes time and reflection. We work with HSIs to create faculty development that allows faculty time to implement as well as measure changes.

We currently offer three levels of work with faculty groups.  Depending on the size of your faculty, and the timing of your grant, we can offer several of these programs in a year-long or multi-year partnership with your faculty.

LEVEL ONE
Faculty Retreats: Teaching with Equity in Mind
(1-2 days, 6-12 hours)
On your campus.

We can facilitate one and two-day faculty retreats to start your group of instructors talking about:
  • what it means to teach for equity rather than equality;
  • the socio-cultural divides between students and faculty in HSIs, and why it is important to bridge them;
  • how the brain learns, and how to embed brain-based strategies into lecture time to help students 'learn how to learn;'
  • how certain practices motivate or demotivate adult learners.

LEVEL TWO
The HSI Faculty Summer Institute: The Certificate in College Teaching & Learning
(4 days, 24 hours in Summer, 3 hours of follow-up in Fall) Various locations.

We are happy to announce we are offering our Certificate in a new format: the HSI Faculty Summer Institute.  We know that many faculty are interested in professional development but have no time during the school year to study the impact of their teaching on student learning.

The Summer Institute brings together faculty from multiple HSIs to provide opportunities for multi-state and multi-region collaboration and networking. During the Institute faculty use our metrics to first identify and analyze inequitable patterns of learning and participation in their classrooms and courses. Faculty then take part in real-time demonstrations of high impact teaching/learning practices, receive crucial implementation advice, and learn how to measure changes to student engagement and learning. By the close of the week faculty have designed a teaching/learning project that they will implement in their classrooms in the Fall.  Read more about 2018 Summer Institutes.

Math and STEM faculty are particularly encouraged to attend our Institutes.

 LEVEL THREE
The Certificate of College Teaching and Learning (CTL) for HSIs (1 semester, 27 hours)
Summer Institute Plus Fall Follow-up Online

This is our hallmark program, and the only program we know of that includes both workshops and follow up coaching and implementation support.  This program can be offered on site to a cohort of 15-20 faculty, or through our Summer Institute format.

Faculty are trained in the education and pedagogy research concerning minority student success in college. Through a combination of in person workshops, online modules, and individualized coaching, faculty are accountable for making real changes to their teaching through the design and implementation of a SoTL inspired teaching/learning project.  They receive support through an entire semester, and present their results at a conference or on campus to their colleagues. Faculty who complete this program are eligible to become ESCALA faculty peer coaches.

Ten HSIs in California, Washington, Colorado and New Mexico, have completed the Certificate program. Read more here.
