The ESCALA HSI Faculty Summer Institute:
Your path to earning the Certificate in College Teaching & Learning in HSIs
The ESCALA HSI Faculty Summer Institute is the only teaching workshop that focuses on increasing student success in Hispanic Serving Institutions through culturally relevant teaching.
The Summer Institute is the kickoff of the Certificate of College Teaching & Learning in HSIs, a 27- hour faculty program designed by ESCALA that includes not only the Summer Institute but also work you'll do when you return to your home campus in Fall.
Faculty complete the Certificate by conducting a small study of their teaching and student learning in a Fall course, meeting several times online with an ESCALA trained coach, and reading and discussing scholarly articles about teaching and learning.
The Certificate concludes in December when you'll present your project findings and learning in a 15-minute 'teach back' presentation, either on your campus or on Zoom with other ESCALA Certificate finishers. Read more about how the Certificate works and the basic timeline.
We highly encourage colleges to come in teams of 3 or more faculty, so that you can sustain changes and build capacity at your home institution.
Lunch entertainment! Corridos del Norte. (Jeremias Martinez and David Garcia).

The is not your ordinary 'sit and get' workshop! During the 3 days of the SI, you'll immerse yourself in learning about best practices by participating in real-time demonstrations of classroom strategies that work for HSI students, and by investigating student success and equity in your own courses through video and data analysis. Read more about how to prepare and what you'll need to bring.
Registration and Cost
How much does the Institute cost?
The cost per faculty is $2400. This can be paid through an institutional credit card or we can generate an invoice when you register.
What does the price include?
This includes the 3 days of the Institute in the summer, lunch each day, and all course materials. Also included in the SI price is everything that a faculty member would need to do to complete the 27-hour Certificate program. This includes time with a peer faculty coach and ESCALA support staff that will help faculty submit materials required for the Certificate.
How does payment work?
Payment is due at time of registration, through invoice or credit card. Individual faculty members will be responsible for working with their home institution for hotel, airfare, and other related travel expenses.
Our refund policy:
Because we are covering many overhead costs and the Institute is small, if a faculty member cancels after May 31, 2019 you will have to substitute another attendee. Before May 31 you may substitute other attendees, or request a new invoice for the correct amount of attendees.
