Description of the Course

This course examines inequities in STEM through a cultural lens, challenging deficit-based narratives and exploring how the culture of STEM shapes student persistence and completion. Participants review research on the “great pushout,” analyze how racialization influences student experiences, and consider why inequities reflect systemic design rather than individual shortcomings. Finally, participants explore culturally responsive mentorship strategies that support dignified help-seeking, productive struggle, and clearer problem-solving structures.
