The CRF program teaches practitioners how to "walk your equity talk", by demonstrating a Latinx-centered, collectivist facilitation model. Participants will be led by ESCALA's team of facilitation experts and learn relevant strategies and protocols that prepare them to lead difficult conversations especially those related to change and uncertainty.

In this training, we discuss:

Techniques for equitizing dialogic spaces and "restrict to liberate" using protocols
The complexities of being a facilitator in HSI spaces, based on identity
How to anticipate derailers to create safe spaces that protect your expertise

Self-Reflection as a Facilitator 

The course includes an Intercultural Development Inventory self-assessment and plan to increase cultural competence. Access to the assessment, one-on-one debrief of your assessment report, and a plan to take with you to continue your self-reflection is included in your registration.

Formal Training in Dialogic Practice

Topics, delivered live via Zoom, include how to respond confidently to common ‘derailing’ situations that occur in HSIs, as well as how to help your participants feel connected and inspired to do DEI work that moves your HSI forward in serving students. We will also and how to protect yourself as a facilitator, as well as how to team effectively with others in facilitation.

Intentionally Small Cohort Sizes

The program is intentionally small in order for participants to have opportunities to fine tune practices and skill sets through discussions with and receive private feedback from our seasoned facilitators.

Dr. Tozi Gutiérrez 

is an Associate Professor of Practice in the School of Social Work at Portland State University, OR.  She was previously a faculty member in the School of Social Work at Texas State University in San Marcos, TX.  Dr. Gutiérrez earned her B.A. in Psychology from Western Oregon State University, an MSW from the University of Texas at Arlington, and a Doctorate in Leadership Studies from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, TX.  Dr. Gutiérrez's areas of research include how instructors influence minoritized student engagement and satisfaction and the implementation of culturally responsive online social work education. Dra. Gutierrez has been a facilitator for ESCALA’s certificate in College Teaching and Learning, Culturally Responsive Facilitation and Moving Towards Serving courses since 2021.
